Lillian’s Story of Finding Comfort and Connection at Hesketh Park Lodge
When Lillian joined us at Hesketh Park Lodge in February 2026, she was facing significant health challenges. At 97, Lillian had experienced multiple health issues, including chest problems and a persistent leg wound, and required specialist nursing care following a hospital discharge.
Prior to moving in, Lillian had been living at home but had become highly dependent on neighbours for support, sleeping in a recliner chair downstairs due to her limited mobility. With her daughter sadly passing away from COVID, Lillian’s son David became her primary source of family support. Choosing Hesketh Park Lodge allowed her to be closer to David while receiving the expert care and compassion she needed.
On arrival, Lillian was entirely bedbound, experiencing exhaustion and discomfort, and unable to take part in the creative hobbies she had once loved, including knitting, crochet, drawing and painting. Our team’s focus was on providing first-class clinical care and emotional support to ensure Lillian felt valued and comfortable.
Our Person-Centred Approach to Lillian’s Care
From the moment Lillian arrived, our nursing team worked closely with her to manage her symptoms, treat her leg wound and improve her overall comfort. Through dedicated care, her wound has healed significantly and her range of motion has improved, which has made a meaningful difference to her physical well-being.
Despite Lillian being bedbound, our activities team ensures she remains connected to life within the home. Our Lead Activities Coordinator, Max, has formed a special bond with Lillian and often shares stories and reminisces with her about the Isle of Man, which is where they were both born. These one-to-one moments bring Lillian joy and comfort, as they allow her to reflect on her rich life history, including her time as an auxiliary nurse at Liverpool Maternity Hospital, where she cared for the first-ever female sextuplets, the Walton family, in 1983.
Lillian’s love for art and creativity remains strong, and although she can no longer create herself, she has generously donated her high-quality art and reference books to our art class. Seeing other residents use these resources brings her great satisfaction. Our team regularly share photos and updates from activities, and recently, residents visited Lillian’s room wearing the beautiful masquerade masks they had created for parade day. This was a special moment that brought her immense delight.
Max shared: “Seeing Lillian's face light up when we show her the masquerade masks and art pieces created by the other residents using her donated books is pure magic. It keeps her beautifully connected to our community.”
Our Facility Staff Nurse added: “While Lillian prefers the comfort of her bed due to her low energy, managing to successfully treat her leg wound and improve her range of motion has been an incredibly rewarding step forward for her physical comfort.”
Lillian’s son, Dave, also reflected on her journey: “I cannot fault the staff at Hesketh Park Lodge, they have provided the highest quality of care to her and they always go above and beyond. I am so glad she is in their care.”
Within just a few weeks of moving in, Lillian began to grow stronger, and her son believes this is down to the care, kindness and uplifting environment provided by our team.
